Puppets and the queer art of failure

Maja Hertoghs teaches the Gender Studies course at the University of Amsterdam. Inspired by the work of Jack Halberstam who uses popular culture (such as Pixar films) to deconstruct normative ways of thinking, Maja expounds these perspectives inspired by the puppetry and object theater shown on Queering Puppets. Not conforming to the norm and heteronormative definitions can provide unexpected pleasures such as freedom of expression and sexuality.

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam (QPFA) is LGBTQI+ friendly, feministisch, activistisch en bovenal:  Schitterend in eigenwijsheid! Plein Theater en Cat Smits Company trotseren de  norm met dit festival vol bontgekleurde visuele uitspattingen uit binnen - en buitenland. Het thema van QPFA 2025 is CREATING BODIES en verkent het idee dat lichamen niet enkel gegeven zijn, maar actief worden vormgegeven en gepresenteerd door hoe we handelen en ons gedragen. Met een bont en brutaal programma onderzoeken we de manieren om via object- poppenspel en performances het lichaam en de norm te bevragen.
