Our house is your house

40 years after the founding of Plein Theater, we once again raise high the intentions of our activist founders: activism, engagement, and building bridges between the diverse communities in our neighborhood.

That neighborhood, in Amsterdam East, is our home. Yet on our little square we also feel a global collective history: a maritime past, and with it the many cultures that have settled here. Shared traumas are present in the area: the Holocaust Memorial and the Slavery Monument.

We also see how wealth and prosperity do not erase poverty. The consequences of advancing gentrification. How climate concerns remain unanswered, how questions of identity stay ever-present.

We want to make visible what is vulnerable, to create space for voices at the margins. To lend the megaphone to members of the LGBTQIA+ community, or to women navigating between cultures. Or to offer the shelter of a safe, intimate space where budding ideas can take root.

That is why we gladly hand you the key to our house: we welcome anyone who dares to raise their hand—neighbors, enthusiasts, emerging or professional theater makers. We love to collaborate.

Our house is your house; our podium awaits your story, your music, your ideal dance night, your food, knitting, and love.

We believe that a theatre is not only a stage, but also a meeting center where artists, local residents, communities, and audiences collectively shape what is presented. Our co-creation programme, where shared ownership and participation are key, can be recognised by the #GetInvolved label.
