QPFA2023 // THE VESSEL

During the Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam from March 28 to April 2, Matt Jackson's exhibition THE VESSEL can be viewed in the foyer of Hotel Arena!

In the performing arts, puppets and masks are tools for actors to give life to characters.

In the ancient ceremonial usage of these objects, they were meant to inhabit a “soul”, to house it like a vessel and allow it the opportunity to live once more.

Matt’s work walks the line between these worlds. Even when motionless on display, his goal is for the masks and objects to feel as if they're alive.

The desired outcome requires a sensitive process of carving their subtle expressions, combined with the choice of materials. He uses wood, paper, organic glues, and clay because he believes these materials carry a vibration of life with them that can be witnessed by an audience.

Tijdens het Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam van 28 maart t/m 2 april is de expositie THE VESSEL van Matt Jackson te bewonderen in de foyer van Hotel Arena!

In de podiumkunsten zijn poppen en maskers hulpmiddelen voor acteurs om personages tot leven te brengen.

In het oude ceremoniële gebruik van deze objecten waren ze bedoeld om een “ziel” te bewonen, om het als een vat (een ‘vessel’ in het Engels) te huisvesten en het de kans te geven om opnieuw te leven.

Matt’s werk bewandelt de grens tussen deze werelden. Zelfs als ze onbeweeglijk worden tentoongesteld, is het zijn doel dat de maskers en objecten voelen alsof ze een adem hebben.

In een subtiel werkproces worden de fijne gezichtskenmerken ontwaard. De materiaalkeuze draagt bij aan het levendige karakter. Hij gebruikt hout, papier, organische lijm en klei omdat hij gelooft dat deze materialen een vibratie van leven met zich meedragen die door een publiek kan worden gevoeld.
