QUEERING PUPPETS FESTIVAL AMSTERDAM 2022
Plein Theater and Puppetry Workspace present the first edition of the QUEERING PUPPETS FESTIVAL AMSTERDAM from 23 to 27 March 2022!
QUEERING PUPPETS FESTIVAL AMSTERDAM gives stage to genre-transcending forms of visual theater and puppetry. A fusion of craft and technology, removing traditional categories from the eye of the beholder. During this multi-day festival, the focus is not on people, but on things. What characters and objects are we surrounded by? How does the imagination bring them to life? The non-human will emerge in various, hybrid forms.
During the ongoing lockdowns of 2021, Cat Smits (puppeteer, theater maker) and Berith Danse (director Plein Theater, theater maker) decided to realize their dream of setting up a new theater festival. The premise of this festival is that people are not the center of the world, nor of the theater floor. It is the imagination that brings things to life.
Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam is a co-production of Plein Theater and Puppetry Workspace in collaboration with Cultuurticket.nl. Plein Theater is the stage of Amsterdam Oost with a contemporary and various program for children, youngsters and adults. Puppetry Workspace is a community-based network of puppeteers, object and visual theater makers, actors and programmers in the Netherlands and Belgium. Leading and engaged performances and films will be shown by, among others: Ariel Doron, Cat Smits Company, Duda Paiva Company, TAMTAM Objektentheater, Ulrike Quade Company, TG Winterberg and an exhibition by ArtCollective BetweenTwoHands.
The ambition is to make Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam an yearly festival. During this festival, speeddates will be organized in which we want to discuss how we can organize a unique festival like this every year. All performances are programmed in and around the Plein Theater. There will also be workshops, a club evening, and Cultuurticket.nl will open an online stream with puppetry and visual performances for the Festival. On March 26 there will be a side program on the Sajetplein from the EAST& initiative.
