On Saturday 26 April, Plein Theater hosted a stage at the Bredeweg Festival, the King's Day Festival of Amsterdam East! Our festive hub was located at the Oranje Vrijstaatplein (Winkelcentrum Oostpoort) with puppet theatre for children, a stage with music and dance and Surinamese snacks from Tante Peggy.

The Bredeweg Festival

Every year, around King's Day, the Bredeweg Festival bursts into life in the Watergraafsmeer neighborhood. At the street market, young and old sell their finest treasures. Dozens of street performers, musicians, and theater groups take the stage. There’s an Opera on the street and even a Children’s Opera. There’s plenty to do for kids: carousel rides, circus, fairground attractions, children's performances, face painting, and much more. And of course, plenty of delicious food and drinks.

The Bredeweg Festival is organized by the neighborhood, for the neighborhood.

EAST&

EAST& is the Pop-Up Cultural Platform of Amsterdam East. Not a stone-built cultural institution, but a nomadic network organization aiming to foster collaboration and connection between residents, cultural and social institutions, and the many diverse, talented makers that the district is home to. Since 2022, EAST& has been traveling through the various neighborhoods of Amsterdam East, organizing cultural activities with and for the community. Founding partners Plein Theater, Framer Framed, De Rode Loper op School, and Production House Nowhere continuously seek collaboration with other partners from this art-rich part of the city.

About the Artists

Jacobus Wieman – Allemaal Poppenkast
We kick off the day at the Plein Theater stage with puppetry by Jacobus Wieman and his show Allemaal Poppenkast. Koos Wieman develops each production entirely by himself: he creates his own puppets, sometimes composes the music, builds the set, and writes the story. But he truly comes to life in front of an audience—his puppets respond directly to what’s happening in the room. His exceptional improvisational talent is indispensable, not only during the performance but also in the creation process. No two shows are ever the same. Each production evolves with time and with the performer’s growth.

Sereme
Sereme sings and plays the Mesenko/Krar, an African string instrument. He performs traditional music from Eritrea, Ethiopian jazz, and Dutch jazz influences.

Josh & Robs
Josh&Robs is an Amsterdam-based rap duo who, since 2020, have been throwing energetic parties full of humor, sweaty dancing crowds, and uncontainable energy. Their music is rooted in hip hop but fearlessly embraces other genres. From gritty synths to old-school beats, South American percussion to catchy Dutch singalongs—Josh&Robs blend everything that inspires them.

Jack Molton Distortion
Jack Molton Distortion is a garage band that’s been creating original music for over 20 years, releasing various songs along the way. The band partly hails from the Watergraafsmeer and rarely performs live—so don’t miss this chance to see them in action!

Geteisem X Primo X Mad Rev
Geteisem x Primo x Mad Rev deliver a unique mix of ska, reggae, funk, hip hop, and electronic music—creating a festive sound that ignites any event. With years of experience in both performance and production, they each built their paths before joining forces in summer 2024 to take their music to new heights.

One of their standout projects is the single/video Pak De Stad Terug (Take Back the City), which has become a movement and received considerable media attention. They’ve been featured in De Telegraaf, Amsterdam750, AT5, and even on ABC Radio Suriname, where they recently ranked number 10 in the Top 10.

The track humorously expresses their frustrations with changes and challenges in Amsterdam—like the new 30 km/h zones, distracted kids on fat bikes, constant roadworks, rising rent pushing friends out, and the increasing dominance of English in the city center. With this song, they call for reclaiming the city and spotlighting these issues.

Their new EP Gezellig includes four tracks, including Pak De Stad Terug, and is now streaming on all platforms. “We’re not left or right—we’re just fair to the city.”

Alma Latina’s
We are a dance group consisting of dancers from various South American countries, united by one shared passion: folklore. Despite our different backgrounds, we share a deep love for dance, culture, and tradition. For us, dance is more than just movement—it’s a language without words, a way to tell our stories and meet one another.

Today, we bring you a dance from Bolivia’s rich cultural heritage: the Tinku or Tinkuy. The word "Tinkuy" comes from the indigenous Quechua language and means “encounter.” Originally a ritual where people gathered—sometimes in conflict—but always with the intention of connection. Today, it’s a vibrant dance, full of energy and power, reflecting the vitality of the Andes region.

Adani & Wolf
Roberto Adani and Daniël Wolf first joined forces in the late ’90s to form PROJECT 2000, a drum & bass crossover band. With this project, they embarked on several exciting musical adventures. The band quickly won the 2000/2001 Heineken Crossover Award, and their debut album It’s About Time was critically acclaimed. For several years, PROJECT 2000 toured across major Dutch festivals such as Drum Rhythm Festival, Lowlands, the 5 May Liberation Helicopter Tour, Mysteryland, Dance Valley, Noorderslag, and the Uitmarkt.

Eight years later, tracks from It’s About Time are still being discovered through radio, TV series, commercials, and compilations.

On King’s Day 2025, Adani & Wolf return to the stage with singer Felipa Fernandez—promising a spectacular closing act for the Plein Theater stage at the Bredeweg Festival!
