News // 4 and 5 May in and around Plein Theater in Amsterdam East

As a theater in Amsterdam East, between the stolpersteine and monuments and in a neighborhood full of significant history, we commemorate and celebrate on May 4 and 5 together with the neighborhood and the city. And we participate annually in the youth projects of Theater Na de Dam. This year we present the performance ERVE with youngsters from Amsterdam, and a program prior to the performance around the commemoration at 20:00 on the square. On May 5th we will participate in the FREEDOM MI-BO in Hotel Arena in the Oosterpark!

Are you commemorating and celebrating with us?

The evening is all about inherited memories. There is, among other acs, music by Titus and word art by Toon Pilet about what commemorating means today to young generations.

At 20:00 we are silent for 2 minutes

After the commemoration there will be soup!

Under the guidance of theater makers Jorn Laponder and Sofia de Valk, youngsters from Amsterdam immersed themselves in the history of Amsterdam during the Second World War. They talked to the elderly about what it was like to be young in wartime. These conversations, full of memories and stories, together with other source material form the basis of the performance ERVE.

What can be the legacy of an event to a next generation? What is your own ERVE and do you want it?

ERVE is the result of an intensive rehearsal process during the May holidays in which the youngsters wrote, created and improvised themselves.

During the fourteenth edition of Theater Na de Dam, nearly 300 young people in 42 projects throughout the Netherlands are committed to providing meaning on May 4, 2023. On Thursday 4 May the performances start at 21:00. From Sittard to Groningen and from Leiden to the Plein Theater in Amsterdam, the voices of the past can be heard in the present.
