Iraqi Bodies - Liza Sulaiman

Liza Sulaiman (Nederland, 1994) is opgegroeid in Amsterdam binnen een Irakese en Wit-Russische familie. Op haar twaalfde begon zij met hiphoplessen bij Solid Ground Movement en danste ze meerdere producties van Alida Dors en Bryan Druiventak. Na het behalen van een Bachelor in Recht (2015) begon Liza aan de Contemporary Urban dansopleiding op de Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, waar zij is afgestudeerd in de richting Choreografie (2021). Het jaar erop werd Liza ondersteund door Theater DeSingel Antwerpen en werkte ze aan projecten binnen Nederland en België. 

Met haar werk wil Liza een brug creëren richting de tragiek in onszelf en in de wereld. De beelden waar wij liever van wegkijken, de onvertelde verhalen en verdrongen gevoelens. Liza onderzoekt hoe we ons relateren tot het eigen lichaam en andere lichamen binnen een onrechtvaardige wereld. Ondanks de confronterende thematieken, is Liza altijd op zoek naar de nuance der dingen. Het balanceren op de grens van opschudding en verstilling, tragiek en komedie, chaos en controle, afstand en nabijheid, connectie en disconnectie. Liza wil hiermee zowel de breekbaarheid als veerkracht van de menselijke conditie te belichten en belichamen. Met een poëtische hoop om de harmonie binnen onszelf en met elkaar te (her)vinden.

Liza is geïnspireerd geraakt door het concept van het 'gefragmenteerde lichaam' van filosoof Jacques Lacan. Het lichaam dat kan worden opgedeeld door een denkbeeldige anatomie. In Iraqi Bodies onderzoekt Liza hoe het lichaam beweegt als het zijn anatomische grenzen overschrijdt. Als het zich kan aanpassen aan alle omstandigheden dat het kwetsbaar maakt. UIT | EEN | VAL II - Rosanna ter Steege

Rosanna ter Steege (1986) is half Moluks, half Nederlands. Opgroeien binnen twee culturen heeft haar haar wortels gegeven. Ze studeerde Danstheater Uitvoerend aan de Fontys Hogeschool voor de kunsten waar ze in 2011 met haar diploma op zak het pand verliet. Sindsdien werkt ze als freelance danseres en maker in de wereld van de kunsten. Het schrijven heeft zich vertaald in een eerste autobiografisch boek.

UIT|EEN|VAL laat licht schijnen op onze mentale toestand en wat daarachter schuilgaat. Datgene dat we vaak niet durven te delen met elkaar, dat wat we bagatelliseren, want ja; ‘Ik ben toch niet gek?!’ Erkenning is key! De voorstelling is geïnspireerd op Rosanna’s autobiografie. UIT | EEN | VAL maakt dissociatief gedrag visueel. Het neemt je mee naar gebeurtenissen waarbij het lijf iets anders weerspiegelt dan het gevoel en andersom. Waarbij lichaamsdelen soms los van elkaar een ander leven leiden en dissociëren. Danser en muzikant spelen op en tegen elkaar in, met ruimte voor een vleugje humor;)

Moving On!

Plein Theater biedt graag ruimte aan dans, performance en experiment. In onze visie geven wij talentvolle makers de kans om zich te ontwikkelen en te presenteren. Daarom werken wij met veel enthousiasme samen met ICK Artist Space. Het productiehuis voor dans ICK Artist Space ondersteunt de ontwikkeling van jong choreografisch talent. Zij dragen avontuurlijke programmering aan van een nieuwe generatie makers voor een maandelijkse dansavond op donderdag in Plein Theater: Moving On! Met Moving On! zetten we door als presentatieplek voor hedendaagse dans en opereren we als stepping stone voor nieuwe, veelbelovende makers.

Iraqi Bodies - Liza Sulaiman

Liza Sulaiman (Netherlands, 1994) grew up in Amsterdam within an Iraqi and Belarussian family. At the age of twelve, she started taking hip-hop classes at Solid Ground Movement and danced in several productions from Alida Dors and Bryan Druiventak. After obtaining a Bachelor in Law (2015), Liza started at the Urban-Contemporary Dance department at Fontys University for Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg, where she graduated in Choreography (2021). The year following her graduation, Liza was supported by Theater DeSingel Antwerp and worked on projects within the Netherlands and Belgium.

Through her work, Liza wants to build a bridge towards the tragedy within ourselves and the world. The images we prefer to look away from, the untold stories and repressed feelings. Liza explores how we relate to our own body and other bodies within an unjust world. Despite the confrontational themes, Liza is interested in the nuance of things. Balancing on the border of turmoil and stillness, tragedy and comedy, chaos and control, distance and proximity, connection and disconnection. She attempts to illuminate and embody both the fragility and resilience of the human condition. With a poetic hope to (re)find the harmony within ourselves and with each other.

Liza got inspired by the concept of the 'fragmented body' from philosopher Jacques Lacan. A body that can be constructed by an imaginary anatomy. In Iraqi Bodies, Liza explores how the body moves when it exceeds its own anatomical borders. How it can adapt or defend itself from all circumstances that makes it vulnerable. The inviolable body as an utopia within a dystopian landscape. 

UIT | EEN | VAL II - Rosanna ter Steege

Rosanna ter Steege (born 1986) is half Moluccan, half Dutch. Growing up within two cultures has given her her roots. She studied Danstheater Uitvoerend at Fontys University for Fine and Performing Arts where she left the premises in 2011 with her diploma in her pocket. Since then, she has worked as a freelance dancer and creator in the world of the arts. Writing has translated into a first autobiographical book.

UIT | EEN | VAL  sheds light on our mental state and what lies behind it. That which we often do not dare to share with each other, that which we downplay, because yes; ‘I'm not crazy, am I?!' Recognition is key! The performance is inspired by Rosanna's autobiography. UIT | EEN | VAL makes dissociative behavior visual. It takes you to events where the body reflects something different than the feeling and vice versa. Where body parts sometimes lead a different life and dissociate separately. Dancer and musician play on and against each other, with space for a touch of humor ;)

Moving On!

Plein Theater devotedly offers a platform for dance, performance and experiment. In our vision, we give talented makers the opportunity to develop and present themselves. Therefore we are very excited to collaborate with ICK Artist Space. The production house for dance ICK Artist Space supports the development of young choreographic talent. They propose adventurous programming by a new generation of makers for a monthly dance evening at Plein Theater: Moving On! With Moving On! we sustain as a stage for contemporary dance and pursue to act as a stepping stone for new, promising makers.
