#17 - The Paper Ensemble

Musici laten papier zingen.

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam

28 maart t/m 2 april 2023

“Queering is something we do, rather than something we are (or are not). Even the term queer itself can be queered, because much of queer theory involves working to fight against normalization even in the field itself.”

#17 - The Paper Ensemble

Artist and composer Jochem van Tol (1983) developed a series of instruments and sculptures made of all kinds of different paper. Many of which he found in rural Japan. Together with musician and performer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti they have realised many performances and exhibited extensively abroad with The Paper Ensemble, especially in Japan amongst artists like Yoko Ono, John Cage, Mamoru, Francis Alys, Yukio Fujimoto, Toshi Ichiyanagi and Ken’ichi Nakagawa. The performances of the Paper Ensemble bridge the worlds between sculptor and musician and show how much there is to discover in the most simple material and how to choose radical consequences from their discoveries.

With their project the Paper Ensemble they give the visitor the opportunity to have an aesthetic experience that would remain hidden if not presented through the work of art. They challenge the borders of what we would define as an object, an image or a (musical) sound. They could be heard as regular sounds, or (when blowing against a sheet of the thinnest paper) not been heard at all, but by putting these sounds in a specific composition, well timed and precisely played, the sounds attain a musical and performative quality that challenges the visitor’s awareness of sound and music in general. The Paper Ensemble catches the magic of a silent material and enlarges it in a poetic and moving way.” (MOCA, Hiroshima, Japan)

28 March – 2 April 2023

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam offers a stage to genre-transcending forms of visual theater and puppetry since 2022. A fusion of craft and technology, where traditional categories vanish in front of the eye of the beholder. QPFA is LGBTQI+ friendly, feminist, activist and above all standing out in queerness!

“Queering is something we do, rather than something we are (or are not). Even the term queer itself can be queered, because much of queer theory involves working to fight against normalization even in the field itself.”

This year the focus is on the themes of femininity and nature in relation to society. The festival and it’s program is pro connection and emancipation, anti war and power, pro strength and intuition, and pro the unseen and untold that is considered subordinate in society.
