The Grand Percussionist
Of het nu gaat om het verwezenlijken van de droom van hun Aziatische ouders, om de strijd binnen te komen bij een prestigieus conservatorium of om het ellebogenwerk waarmee je een carrière voor jezelf opbouwt: het valt niet mee bij te blijven in de extreem competitieve en overkritische cultuur van klassieke muziek. En het is lastig aan de bel te trekken als je meerderen hun macht op je botvieren.
In hun voorstelling The Grand Percussionist onderzoeken Yung-Tuan Ku en Che-Sheng Wu deze onderwerpen middels slagwerktheater met een vleug humor. Ze tonen de hindernissen die ze overwonnen: van seksisme tijdens audities tot intieme en intimiderende een-op-een-momenten met hun mentoren. Hun reis en ervaringen blijken ook exemplarisch voor andere beroepen.
Met hun show willen Ku en Wu hun publiek bewustmaken van waartoe negatieve ervaringen en psychologische druk kunnen leiden. Want het lichaam onthoudt meer dan je soms lief is.

De serie biedt de mogelijkheid te reflecteren op de huidige tijd en vormt zo een laboratiorium voor de klank van vandaag. De curatoren en artistiek leiders van Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam zijn componiste Aspasia Nasopoulou en basklarinettiste Fie Schouten.

The Grand Percussionis
Studying under Asian parents‘ illusion of a music career, the battle to get into a prestigious school and the struggle to compete with others in the world of classical music: it's not easy to alwas keep up in an extemely competive and judgemental culture. It's painful to remain silent when facing superiors abusing their power.
In their show The Grand Percussionist Yung-Tuan Ku and Che-Sheng Wu explore these topics through percussion theater with humour. It showcases the hurdles they have taken: from sexism during auditions to intimate and intimidating one-on-one time with their tutors. Their journey also translates into other professional fields. Through their work, Ku and Wu want to raise awareness to what negative encounters and psychological pressure can lead up to. Because the body keeps the score.
Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam
Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam offers a stage to contemporary chamber music. Adventurous and small-scale performances, new compositions and leading musicians; at Plein Theater you can experience this unique concept in an intimate atmosphere every month. The series offers the opportunity to reflect on the present time and thus forms a laboratory for today's sound. The curators and artistic directors of Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam are composer Aspasia Nasopoulou and bass clarinetist Fie Schouten.
