“Vanaf het begin was de richting duidelijk. Vanaf mijn vierde speelde ik euphonium – net als mijn vader; op mijn zevende gaf ik mijn eerste openbare optreden; later begon ik ook met piano; en op mijn twaalfde koos ik uiteindelijk voor tuba.” Maar hoe ver men kan gaan met dit ogenschijnlijk logge instrument werd Melvyn Poore pas tijdens zijn studie duidelijk. Zijn ervaringen als 'music director' van het 'Birmingham Arts Laboratory' droegen bij aan het besef dat er een leven als tubist is buiten de alledaagsheid van het orkest. “Zelfs als student speelde ik het liefst stukken die helemaal niet voor tuba waren geschreven.”

De eerste experimenten van Poore in het "Arts Lab" met tape en elektronica brachten hem op een nieuwe passie: de experimentele interactie van akoestische instrumenten en technologie, die voor hem nu dezelfde prioriteit heeft als puur akoestische experimenten met de klankmogelijkheden van de tuba. Poore heeft zijn ervaring als tolk, componist en tevens docent doorgegeven: hij was “Research Assistant” aan het Salford College of Technology (1989-1991), te gast bij het Zentrum für Kunst- und Medientechnologie (Centre for Art and Media Technology) in Karlsruhe van 1992-1994 (waar hij zijn concept 'METAinstrument' ontwikkelde), en 1993-95 'Visiting Professor for Electro-Acoustic Music' aan het Royal College of Music in Londen. Sinds 1995 is hij vast lid van Ensemble Musikfabrik en zet zich in voor de oprichting van de pedagogische afdeling van het ensemble.

Nuno Silva

Nuno Silva is een opkomende saxofonist en pedagoog met Portugese roots die zich speciaal richt op nieuwe interdisciplinaire creaties. Hij voltooide zijn master Saxofoon aan Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg en master Muziekeducatie aan Aveiro University in Aveiro, Portugal. Sinds het begin van zijn muzikale activiteit werkt hij vaak samen met componisten, dansers en acteurs om nieuw repertoire voor het instrument te creëren en nieuwe wegen van expressie te verkennen door het in heel Europa uit te voeren. Hij is de mede-oprichter van het ION-collectief, [uan] duo en werkt vaak samen met ensembles zoals Ensemble Klang, Oniros Ensemble, 9x13 en anderen. Momenteel geeft hij privéles aan de Nuno Silva-Saxofoonstudio, waar hij zowel muzikale als pedagogische activiteiten ontwikkelt tussen Portugal en Nederland, waar hij is gevestigd. Nuno Silva wordt ondersteund door Henri-Selmer Paris saxofoons

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam biedt een podium aan hedendaagse kamermuziek. Nieuwe composities en toonaangevende musici, in het Plein Theater krijg je maandelijks op de zondagmiddag de kans om dit unieke concept in intieme sfeer te ervaren. De curatoren en artistiek leiders van Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam zijn componiste Aspasia Nasopoulou en basklarinettiste Fie Schouten. Beide ontvingen (resp. 2019, 2021) de Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Compositieopdracht Award.

Melvyn Poore

“The direction was clear from early on. From the age of four, I played euphonium – like my father; at seven I gave my first public performance; later, I started piano as well; and at twelve I finally decided in favour of tuba.”
But exactly how far one can go with this apparently unwieldy instrument only became clear to Melvyn Poore while he was studying. His experiences as “music director” of the “Birmingham Arts Laboratory” contributed to the realisation that there is a life as tubist beyond the humdrum of the orchestra. “Even as a student, I preferred to play pieces that weren’t written for tuba at all.”

Poore’s first experiments in the “Arts Lab” with tape and electronics led him on to a new passion: the experimental interaction of acoustic instruments and technology, which for him now has the same priority as purely acoustic experiments involving the sound possibilities of the tuba. Poore has passed on his experience in the capacities of interpreter, composer and also lecturer: he was “Research Assistant” at the Salford College of Technology (1989-1991), a guest at the Zentrum für Kunst- und Medientechnologie (Centre for Art and Media Technology) in Karlsruhe from 1992-1994 (where he developed his concept ‘METAinstrument’), and 1993-95 “Visiting Professor for Electro-Acoustic Music” at the Royal College of Music in London.

Since 1995 he is a permanent member of Ensemble Musikfabrik and dedicates himself to the creation of the pedagogical department of the ensemble.

Nuno Silva

Nuno Silva is an emerging saxophonist and pedagogue of Portuguese roots specially aiming for new interdisciplinary creations. He completed his master in Saxophone at Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg and master of Music Education at Aveiro University in Aveiro, Portugal. Since the beginning of his musical activity often collaborates with composers, dancers and actors in order to create new repertoire for the instrument and exploring new paths of expression performing it all around Europe. He's the co-founder of the ION collective, [uan] duo and oftens collaborate with ensembles such as Ensemble Klang, Oniros Ensemble, 9x13 among others. Currently he teaches privately at Nuno Silva-Saxophone Studio, developing both musical and pedagogical activity between Portugal and the Netherlands, where he’s based. Nuno Silva is endorsed by Henri-Selmer Paris saxophones.

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam provides a stage to contemporary chamber music. New compositions and leading musicians, every month in the Plein Theater on Sunday afternoons you can experience this unique concept in an intimate setting. The curators and artistic directors of Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam are composer Aspasia Nasopoulou and bass clarinetist Fie Schouten. Both received the Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Composition Commission Award (2019, 2021 respectively).
