Masterclass “The Sustainability of the Puppet” by Matt Jackson

As a professional puppet and mask maker for over 20 years, the basis of my work has been creating objects that appear to come to life on stage or screen.  However, beyond the mere ability to make something that can move, or be moved, I have researched more about how an object can actually feel alive?  What about its character, its expression, appears to look right into your eyes? And how does its material affect this relationship with you?  In recent years I have attempted to leave behind my history of working with various harmful substances and to focus primarily on organic & non-toxic materials and processes.

We are all aware of the state of our planet’s environment and that it is not going in a healthy direction. As an artist who feels the urge to contribute more objects to our already cluttered existence I also feel the responsibility to do this in as sustainable a manner as possible. I try to consider the whole process from start to finish-  Where has the material come from? How has it traveled to my studio? Is it harmful while I build with it? Is it harmful to others who play with it? How much waste does it create?

These questions have led me to my current practice of wood carving, clay sculpting and casting objects with paper-mache and organic glues.

During this masterclass I will explain in more depth about the decisions during my working process while inviting you to join in a dialogue with me about sustainability in the art of the puppet. I will bring with me samples of my favorite materials for you to discover. And most excitedly, you will have the opportunity to get your hands dirty while exploring the possibilities!

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam

28 March – 2 April 2023

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam offers a stage to genre-transcending forms of visual theater and puppetry since 2022. A fusion of craft and technology, where traditional categories vanish in front of the eye of the beholder. Plein Theater and Puppetry Workspace defy the norm with this festival full of colorful visual outbursts from NL and abroad. QPFA is LGBTQI+ friendly, feminist, activist and above all standing out in queerness!

“Queering is something we do, rather than something we are (or are not). Even the term queer itself can be queered, because much of queer theory involves working to fight against normalization even in the field itself.”

This year the focus is on the themes of femininity and nature in relation to society. The festival and it’s program is pro connection and emancipation, anti war and power, pro strength and intuition, and pro the unseen and untold that is considered subordinate in society. Femininity, the creative, the vulnerable ánd Mother Earth.

Als professionele poppen- en maskermaker, al meer dan 20 jaar, is de basis van mijn werk het creëren van objecten die op het podium of op het scherm tot leven lijken te komen. Naast het loutere vermogen om iets te maken dat kan bewegen of kan worden verplaatst, heb ik echter meer onderzoek gedaan naar hoe een object echt levend kan aanvoelen? Hoe zit het met zijn karakter, zijn uitdrukking, het 'lijkt je recht in de ogen te kijken'? En hoe beïnvloedt het materiaal deze relatie met jou? De afgelopen jaren heb ik gepoogd mijn geschiedenis van het werken met verschillende schadelijke stoffen achter me te laten en me primair te richten op organische & niet-toxische materialen en processen.

We zijn ons allemaal bewust van de toestand van het milieu op onze planeet en dat het niet de goede kant op gaat. Als kunstenaar die de drang voelt om meer objecten bij te dragen aan ons toch al rommelige bestaan, voel ik ook de verantwoordelijkheid om dit op een zo duurzaam mogelijke manier te doen. Ik probeer het hele proces van begin tot eind te overdenken. Waar komt het materiaal vandaan? Hoe is het naar mijn studio gereisd? Is het schadelijk terwijl ik ermee bouw? Is het schadelijk voor anderen die ermee spelen? Hoeveel afval levert het op?

Deze vragen hebben me geleid naar mijn huidige praktijk van houtsnijwerk, beeldhouwen in klei en het gieten van objecten met papier-maché en organische lijmen.

Tijdens deze masterclass ga ik dieper in op de beslissingen tijdens mijn werkproces en nodig ik je uit om met mij in gesprek te gaan over duurzaamheid in de kunst van het poppenspel. Ik zal monsters van mijn favoriete materialen meenemen om te ontdekken. En het meest opwindende is dat je de kans krijgt om je handen vuil te maken terwijl je de mogelijkheden verkent!

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam biedt sinds 2022 een podium aan genre-overstijgende vormen van beeldend theater en poppenspel. Een versmelting van ambacht en technologie, waarbij traditionele categorieën worden opgeheven voor het oog van de toeschouwer. Plein Theater en Puppetry Workspace trotseren de norm met dit festival vol bontgekleurde visuele uitspattingen uit binnen- en buitenland. QPFA is LGBTQI+ friendly, feministisch, activistisch en bovenal: Schitterend in eigenwijsheid!

Dit jaar ligt de focus op de thema’s het vrouwelijke en de natuur in relatie tot de maatschappij. Het festival en de programmering is pro verbinding en emancipatie, anti oorlog en macht, pro kracht en intuïtie en pro het ongeziene en onbenoembare dat onderschikt wordt geacht in de maatschappij. Vrouwelijkheid, het scheppende, het kwetsbare én Moeder Aarde.
