Plein Theater devotedly offers a stage for contemporary music. Adventurous and small-scale performances, new compositions and leading musicians; In our regular series Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam you get the opportunity to experience this unique concept in intimate atmosphere every month. And in the summer of 2024, we open the doors of our production house wide. In the Summer of Music in and around Plein Theater in Amsterdam East you get to explore multidisciplinary compositions, get exclusive work-in-progress insights and participate in extraordinary research projects. Plein Theater welcomes Kate Moore as artist-in-residence 2024!

Every summer Plein Theater invites an artist-in-residence, an artist who will have the opportunity for a few weeks to further develop a performance and involve locals and interested participants in the creative process. Berith Danse, director and artistic director of the Plein Theater, is the curator of the participants:

“We are extremely excited to welcome Kate Moore as artist-in-residence. Kate Moore, who lives in Amsterdam East, is not just a composer; she has earned international recognition and her works are performed by some of the leading ensembles, such as Akso|Schönberg, Amsterdam Cello Octet and the Groot Omroepkoor.

Kate has several prizes to her name, including the Gieskes-Strijbis Podium Prize in 2022 and the prestigious Matthijs Vermeulen Prize in 2017 for her impressive composition “The Dam”. And did you know that she founded her own ensemble, the Herz Ensemble?

Her musical adventure has taken her all over the world from the MacDowell Colony to a residency at the Paris Conservatory. And if that wasn't enough, she also obtained a PhD from the Sydney University Conservatorium of Music.

We look forward to working with Kate and are excited for the creative energy and music she will bring during her residency at Plein Theater.”

Ossenlied / A Beautiful Path

From Monday August 12 to Sunday September 1, composer Kate Moore will work in her residency on the Ossenlied, which is part of her research project A Beautiful Path

A Beautiful Path: Plein Air Composing is a research project about composing in the landscape where the land is both the atelier of the composer and the stage upon which the composer performs. This research period allows the composer to explore the creative process through writing, composing, improvising and documentary in dialog with nature and the environment whilst walking long distance routes carrying musical instruments. 

Het Ossenlied (The Ox Song) is a 54-day hike across Netherlands, England, Wales, Ireland from Oss to Skellig Michael through Oxford to compose an epic story cycle set to music. Inspired by troubadours and epic poets of ancient times, following in the tradition of the Tain, Edda, Mabinogion and Beowulf and the Canterbury Tales, composer Kate Moore is inpired to write her own story cycle while long distance walking and composing with a lyre and vielle that she carries with her.

Participate and #GetInvolved

Over the three weekends there are musical public activities with Kate Moore and guest artists that you can participate in, from composer walks to a kinetic workshop to a music marathon and a final work-in-progress presentation of the Ossenlied with the Herz Ensemble on Saturday, May 31! Our café/restaurant Eetlokaal with summer terrace is open every weekend as well and on the walls is a photo exhibition of photographer Isabelle Vigier. Combi tickets are available for the activities including lunch or dinner.

The Emerge of Form 'Sculptural representation of music and the mysticism of sound'
Improvisation with kinetic sculptures, dance by Miri Lee and music by Vera Morais. Artist talks by artists Maria Blaisse and Pierluigi Pompei. Finally, they enter into dialogue with each other and with the audience.
